Luke 24:30-32 says: When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?”

Cleopas and his friend walked with Jesus, talked with Jesus, even ate dinner with Jesus and did not recognize him. It wasn't until the "breaking of bread" (a term used regularly throughout Scripture for communion) that their eyes were opened and they recognized (and knew - see Luke 24:35) Jesus.

At the Table of the Lord, our eyes are opened to the wonder of Jesus and our hearts burn with the power of the Holy Spirit. When we come to the Table, we don't simply remember a past event, but allow the past remembrance to become a present experience. It is a time for us to relive for ourselves the saving events of Christ. Too often we remember past events without allowing them to affect our worship today.

The next time you are invited to the Table, open your eyes and let your heart burn within as you experience the presence of Christ our Savior.
