Worship Reflections – "Another In the Fire"

WORSHIP REFLECTIONS are weekly devotionals based on worship songs/hymns. Our hope is that this content encourages your love and adoration of Christ Jesus as you grow in closer communion with Him through personal worship.

Steven Brooks, Director of Worship Quest Ministries, presents this worship song devotional based on the Hillsong song "Another In The Fire".

The song Another In the Fire begins with these words:

There’s a grace when the heart is under fire
Another way when the walls are closing in
And when I look at the space between
Where I used to be and this reckoning
I know I will never be alone

In these times, there seems to be a lot of negative news. A lot of things that are attempting to hinder us. Lots of hurdles in life that can bleed into our walk with God.

The chorus

There was another in the fire
Standing next to me

You see, we are not the only ones who have faced these kinds of challenges.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were thrown in to a fiery furnace because the refused to bow down to a false God. The King was furious with them, so he sentenced them to death. This wasn’t going to be a pleasant experience for them. This was a hurdle that they didn’t know if they would make it over. And God could have easily extinguished the fire, but He didn’t. He met them in the fire. Scripture tells us that when the guards and the King looked into the fire, there weren’t just three men standing in the middle of the blaze, but four. God met them in the middle of the difficulty.

The chorus continues,

There was another in the waters
Holding back the seas

God called Moses to assist in the deliverance of the people of Israel out of the grip of the Egyptian Pharaoh. Shortly after the Israelites were freed, Pharaoh began to have second thoughts, so he sent his army after them. To retrieve them and take them back into captivity. The Israelites had reached the Red Sea. Looking in front of them, all they saw was a vast amount of water. Looking behind them, they saw the Egyptian army coming to capture them. So God, as he so often does, provided a way through the trouble. He parted the Sea. Right in the middle of the sea, was a path of dry ground for the Israelites to walk across. But God doesn’t stop there, he goes through the Sea with them. Scripture tells us that God, as a pillar of cloud, and fire at night to light their way, stayed between the Israelites and the Egytians. Once again, God doesn’t just remove the obstacle or trouble, he joins his people in the midst of it.

The chorus concludes,

And should I ever need reminding
Of how I’ve been set free
There is a cross that bears the burden
Where another died for me

God the Father could have snapped his fingers, or even just simply thought of salvation, and the world would have been provided salvation. But instead, he sends his Son to dwell with us, to be one of us. Ultimately to die for us. You see, no matter how bad the situation, and believe me, it can’t get much worse than being on a collision course with an eternity absent of God, God will meet us exactly where we are.

The final verse of the song is a declaration of who Jesus is and how we are invited to respond,

There is no other name
But the Name that is Jesus
He who was and still is
And will be through it all
So come what may in the space between
All the things unseen and this reckoning
I know I will never be alone

Moses writes God’s words for us found in Deuteronomy 31, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” The writer of the book of Hebrews will late reiterate that same promise.

So I want to encourage us to keep our eyes focused in the right place. Because God is not hindered by what goes on in this world. He continues to build his church and he continues to work in each one of you and me. Just believe that no matter what you have gone through, are going through, and will go through, he is with you working out all things for your good and for his glory.
