The Lord Is Our Shepherd

Psalm23.jpg

Call to Worship – from Psalm 23

Come, walk in green pastures and follow the Shepherd. Come, lie down in green pastures and trust the Shepherd. Come, dine at the table of abundance and be fed by the Shepherd. Come, dwell in God’s house and live in the Shepherd’s care.

Prayer

Father God, our Good Shepherd, you know our names; you care for us. When we face darkness and death, walk beside us. When we hunger for your love, fill us with your presence. When we are fearful, feed us at your table. May we dwell in the house of goodness and mercy all the days of our lives. Amen.

Response – Psalm 23 (I Am Not Alone) (Joshua Sherman, Laurel Taylor, Steven Musso, 2018)

The Lord is my Shepherd
He goes before me
Defender behind me

I won’t fear
I’m filled with anointing
My cup’s overflowing
No weapon can harm me
I won’t fear

Hallelujah I am not alone
He's my comfort, always holds me close

He always guides me
Through mountains & valleys
His joy is refreshing

Restores my soul
Mercy and Goodness
Gives me assurance
That I'll see Your Glory
Face to face

Your Spirit lives within me
So I will walk in Your Peace
Your Spirit lives within me
My Victory (My Victory)

Prayer of Confession

Good Shepherd, we take your care for granted. In the midst of your many blessings, we complain of not having enough. In the presence of danger, we fail to trust your abiding love. When you set a table before us, we turn from you. Call us back to your care and help us trust your caring presence, that our actions may proclaim your truth. Amen.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow us all the days of our lives. God forgives our failures and calls us back into the flock.

Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,
of one being with the Father; through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven:
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father [and the Son], who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy universal and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayer for Others

Jesus, during Your ministry on Earth You showed Your power and caring by healing people of all ages and stations of life from physical, mental, and spiritual ailments. Be present now to people who need Your loving touch because of COVID-19. May they feel Your power of healing through the care of doctors and nurses. Take away the fear, anxiety, and feelings of isolation from people receiving treatment or under quarantine. Give them a sense of purpose in pursuing health and protecting others from exposure to the disease. Protect their families and friends and bring peace to all who love them.

Almighty God, we know that everything is in Your sovereign control. We ask that You keep this new coronavirus from continuing to spread. Give government officials the ability to safely handle people arriving from other countries. Help people decide to stay home instead of traveling or going out needlessly. Holy Spirit, remind people to wash their hands properly. And while it may be heartbreaking, comfort families as they decide to keep their distance from elderly or other high-risk family members.

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom, the power, the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Response – The Lord’s My Shepherd (Stuart Townend, 2006)

The Lord's my Shepherd I'll not want
He makes me lie in pastures green
He leads me by the still still waters
His goodness restores my soul

And I will trust in You alone
And I will trust in You alone
For Your endless mercy follows me

Your goodness will lead me home
He guides my ways in righteousness
And He anoints my head with oil
And my cup it overflows with joy
I feast on His pure delights

And though I walk the darkest path
I will not fear the evil one
For You are with me
And Your rod and staff
Are the comfort I need to know

Benediction

Nourished by the Shepherd’s abundant love, go forth to walk in the paths of righteousness.
Love one another in truth and action. May God’s abundant blessings abide in you forever.
